See a Problem? We’d love your help.

Alice Miller has achieved recognition for her revolutionary work on the causes and effects of child abuse - here she works towards demolishing the wall of silence which surrounds the sufferings of early childhood as they affect everyday life, politics, the media, psychiatry and psychotherapy. An infant's trust and dependency on its parents, its longing to be loved and be able to love in return, are boundless. To exploit this dependency, to confuse a child's longings and abuse its trust by pretending that this is somehow good for it, Alice Miller condemns as a criminal act, committed.

Miller pleads for a course of remembrance and recognition on the part of the victim, and for awareness and condemnation of child abuse on the part of the society.

Alice Miller was a genius. She had the courage to shed light where others do not wished to know and preferred to ignore the issue. God bless her.

Although I am not a psychologist, I am in the helping professions. I am also a trauma survivor and believe Miller's message is a very important one -- that the ills of the world are created one mistreated child at a time. She makes this point with superb examples -- mostly brief descriptions of her other books -- describing documented abuse of dictators like Hitler and Stalin -- and showing how that abuse is perpetuated exponentially when one is a position of power.

However, she includes very broad, and I think, grossly unfair indictments of pretty much all those in the helping professions -- indicating if one we would listen to a person's childhood story, perhaps they could heal (instead of having our own agenda, etc.) To me, Miller loses credibility with this book (the second I've purchased of hers, the first being The Drama of the Gifted Child, which I loved and felt was very insightful.)

Clearly, Miller had a HORRIBLE experience in the profession she writes so scathingly about -- and that is too bad, because, my experience has been there are MANY EXCEPTIONAL people in the helping professions, who are listening, and helping others achieve deep healing.

Still a good read but the personal axe got old pretty quickly, for me.

It is a painful but fulfilling experience to stop telling lies to oneself - to face life without deception and illusion, to constantly question yourself and those close to you, quite simply - to live consciously and meaningfully and to accept your past as it truly was. Love and relationships can't help but win over money, sex and power!

Dr. Alice Miller is to be commended for her never-ending work, and delving, into the deep, dark, limitless oceans of the un-worked through human mind, the last, and Ignored, Frontier. Her courage in facing the Truth and revealing it, ONLY to the WILLING reader, is to be genuinely admired. This Society owes her a great debt in her courage in facing her own personal truth and revealing the DEVASTATING FACTS about children in the hands of merciless, conscienceless, violent, justifying "adults". The reason this society appears such a mess is because of the very adults this WONDERFUL writer describes, as they raise the children we will face as adults, in our daily lives. If every parent on Earth were as conscious, honest, courageous and kind as Dr. Alice Miller, this planet would be The Paradise we all Pray for.

Alice Miller writes excellently and passionately. Both professionals and non-professionals ought to be inspired and enlightened by reading this book. It deals with the significance of repressed childhood traumas as they, unless identified and the affected individuals properly treated in psychotherapy, tend to perpetuate future generations of child maltreatment and abuse. "Poisonous pedagogy" is a central theme. Politicians, lawmakers, healthcare professionals and parents must increase their awareness about this urgent, still mysteriously neglected, issue.
Never before have I read words that were so profound. Dr. Miller is the bravest and most courageous person since Dr.Seigmond Freud. He too, had been rebuked by all his medical peers, yet he had the answer dead correct. Women who had experienced sexual hysteria as young adults had been indeed sexually violated as a children.
Dr. Alice Miller has indeed shed new light to where evil and abuse is created. We are still in the Dark Ages of how truly one is effected by pain, abandonment, neglect, threats, ritualistic beatings, isolation, spankings, intimidating looks, witnessing abuse and horror, lost, frightened, screams not answered, not comforted and so on as a newborn and throughout his formative years.
The irony is, we as a society will not and can not take responsibility of our own creation of evil and hatred due to ignorance, arrogance and denial.
