A guide to writing the personal essay, including the basics of essay writing, how to move past private "journaling," and instructions for revision and strategies for getting published.

Award winning essayist Scott Russell Sanders once compared the art of essay writing to "the pursuit of mental rabbits"—a rambling through thickets of thought in search of some brief glimmer of fuzzy truth. While some people persist in the belief that essays are stuffy and antiquated, the truth is that the personal essay is an ever-changing creative medium that provides an ideal vehicle for satisfying the human urge to document truths as we experience them and share them with others—to capture a bit of life on paper.

"Crafting the Personal Essay" is a great resource for anyone looking to start or improve their essay writing. It provides useful tips, writing exercises, and in-depth knowledge about essay writing. It helps writers view essay writing from different perspectives to develop content from start to finish. Writers also get an idea of how to present their content to a reading audience.

I like to check a few things initially when getting a reference/idea book. 1) If I open it to any page, will I get something from it useful and want to keep reading. Check+, 2) Are there samples, references, and source material...i.e. url's to use. Check+, and 3) Clarity and common sense language indicating they have the "chops" and have been in our moccasins. Check+ Add this author is the synapses behind Brevity Online Magazine, it is a book with lots of info for a myriad of newbie and experienced author types out there, and I'd give it 8-10 stars if needed. Sure beats a "webinar" or one-day class that leaves the bank account tapped and that 30-hours-later angst of "whiskey-tango-foxtrot" did I spend my money on. Just my opinion. This is a keeper for sure.

I like Dinty W. Moore’s Crafting the Personal Essay: A Guide for Writing and Publishing Creative Nonfiction because Moore does a masterful job of showing the apprentice how it’s done. Other how-to writers on the topic do, but Moore uses more stick-to-itiveness in his approach. A goodly number of similar titles are on the market, and all those I have read stress advice that has become particular to the author's experience and expertise. Of course, all stress an approach to the writing process that has served them best. But when I finish reading their advice, I feel as if these writers are not quite in my corner.

Moore’s approach sounds more like that of the bricklayer than that of the academic, although he is that, too.

The most helpful part of this book is how it orients you to the myriad of different types of essays. Each area includes helpful tips and even creative writing prompts that got my head whirling with ideas. In terms of fulfilling it's promise on "crafting" the personal there are books that go far deeper like Story Craft and You Cant Make This Stuff Up. The real value in Dinty's book is in helping budding essayist understand what they're getting into, and to "assay" if creative non-fiction is for them. On that front, it does it's job brilliantly.

I bought this together with Moore's new book, The Story Cure. And I love them both equally. I've been writing and teaching for years, but sometimes you just need a new perspective to make your writing and teaching feel fresh and new. This book is helping me enter my own work in a new way, which is exciting. And it's making me a better teacher. Love it!

This e-book is chock-full of information, including helpful tips and links to websites which were tremendously helpful. If you write memoirs or essays of any kind, this book is well worth reading in depth. I am still visiting some of the websites offered and may read the entire little book again!

I would heartily recommend this book to writers of essays and perhaps those who are thinking about writing this type of work and really don't know where to begin or when to stop. This easy to read book will put you on the right path.

This book was the first in a series of assigned craft books for my graduate education program. It challenges me to become the better writer I hope to be. At the same time, it’s readability suggests I’m already someone of value!! For a reader who is highly motivated but insecure about her writing ability, I found this book wonderfully useful and intend to return to it often!!
A very useful guide that covers a wide range of essay writing styles and topics. The author really hits his stride when he uses his own excellent essays as teaching primers, dissecting and analyzing them with us under a microscope so we can really understand how they are put together. This book's structure and clearly titled chapter headings make it easy to use as a reference book for specific writing assignments or as a textbook in a classroom setting.
