Michael Viney MRIA (born 1933) is an artist, author, broadcaster, and journalist, based in Ireland. He was born in Brighton, England. He is best known for his writings on nature. In the 1960s he wrote for The Irish Times about social issues such as the fate of people in institutional care. His articles were later incorporated into the Ryan Report on institutional abuse of children in Ireland.

For 20 years the author has lived on a remote farm in County Mayo. This is an account of a 12-month cycle of the land. The text includes the arrival of the whales and dolphins at the beginning of the year and tales of duck keeping and mussel harvesting.
