Allende was born Isabel Allende Llona in Lima, Peru, the . Portrait in Sepia (2000) Retrato en sepia. City of the Beasts (2002) La ciudad de las bestias

Allende was born Isabel Allende Llona in Lima, Peru, the daughter of Francisca Llona Barros and Tomás Allende, who was at the time a second secretary at the Chilean embassy  . During a visit to California on a book tour in 1988, Allende met her second husband, attorney Willie Gordon. They married in July 1988. City of the Beasts (2002) La ciudad de las bestias. Kingdom of the Golden Dragon (2004) El reino del dragón de oro.

Retrato en sepia book. If you like Isabel Allende's books for their exciting adventures and interesting locales (instead of romance or elaborate fictional multi-generational family sagas), then you are likely to be disappointed by 'Portrait in Sepia'. For adventure lovers, stick with its predecesssor 'Daughter of Fortune', 'Zorro' or 'Island Beneath the Sea' instead. The first quarter of the book is a dull explanation of the characters and their relationships.

Also by Isabel Allende. She barely mastered the rudiments of writing and arithmetic, she never read a book in her life, and she added on her fingers-she never subtracted-yet everything she touched made money. Had it not been for her spendthrift sons and relatives, she would have died with all the splendor of an empress. Those were the years the railroad connecting the east and the west coasts of the United States was being built.

I have read some books of this Chilean writer. Some I like and some I do not, so she is not one of my preferred writers but this book was given to me as a birthday present and it was a real surprise. I not only liked it very much, I could not stop reading it. I read at night because it is the only time I have where I can be with myself and I was looking forward to that moment every day.
I liked it very much and have recommended it to many of my friends. The characters are wonderfully described as well as the Chilean society one of the most conservative societies even today, and I have learnt many things of their history I did not know anything about which is always appreciated. Congratulations to the writer and hope many more people have the chance to read it and share comments which I believe help others to choose.

One of my favorite Isabel Allende books. It's the sequel to Hija de La Fortuna, which is also excellent. Good historical fiction about California and Chile.
