Unfortunately, I must have put this book in my cart before Mara Moreno posted her review. She is right; the CD contains a very small portion of the listening activities, and it seems the activities were chosen in such a manner as to be sure the ones a reader would most want are not included. The activities on the CD are not very useful. I bought the book to use with a student I tutor. Fortunately I purchased another book at the same time: Mastering the American Accent, by Lisa Mojsin. Mojsin's book is much more useful. It comes with four great CDs that cover all the listening exercises. Also, the Mojsin book addresses prosidy (although the word 'prosidy' is not used). Prosidy, the rhythm and melody of speech, is very important in English. The Mojsin book covers such prosidy concepts as thought groups, focus words, content words, and function words. If a student does not learn the proper English prosidy, he will not only have speech problems, but will also have problems understanding the spoken word. For instance, when tested, my student could hear no difference between "Is that Mr. Fogg?" and "is that mist, or fog?" Before purchasing Pronunciation Pairs, consider Mojsin's book.

Overall I like this book as a way to teach pronunciation to learners of English as a Second Language. The use of similar words that are pronounced differently is a great way to highlight pronunciation problems and to effectively overcome those problems. The book is broken up into units, each of which treating a different phoneme. Although there is a teachers' edition of the book, this one is fine for both teachers and learners.

My only complaint deals with the audio CD that is included. Whereas each unit has a number of tasks (starting with the pronunciation pair exercise), the CD only includes one task per unit, and never the pronunciation pairs. This has been frustrating for my current learner.

This minimal pairs pronunciation book is exactly what I have been looking for to use in my beginners ESL Listening/Speaking class. A lot of books that I have looked at and bought didn't have enough in class activities to practice, read aloud, and connect with other sounds. This is such a GREAT book to help with pronunciation. They only draw back is the British English focus, but I really like this book and excited that I bought it ^-^

Bought it for my mom since it's the book they're using in her adult English learning class. I guess it's doing it's job. My mom has writing all over hers already. From what she's told me, it's been very useful.

This product comes with a cd but the cd doesn't have all the exercise that the book demands you complete. Let give you an Idea, chapter 1 contains 5 exercise that requires you to complete it with the cd but the cd only contains one audio for that chapter. and so for the rest of the chapters of the book.

I have several books to teach pronunciation to ESL students, but this is by far one of the best. The illustrations are fantastic. It works on a different sound each chapter while also talking about intonation patterns and stress in different contexts - numbers, lists, pronouns, negative structures, compound nouns, questions, -ed verbs, connected speech. There are review chapters, dialogs to contextualize practice, discussions, and games. I'm love with this book. I recommend it to everyone.
Buen estado para ser un libro usado. Lo recibí con muchas partes del libro escritas/rayadas, pero es lo normal en un libro de alquiler usado. Cumplió su propósito.
