Found myself unable to finish this book. The subject was poorly presented, bland dribble that I don't think that would help me to initiate, maintain, or end a conversation with a stranger. It's largely a book telling you to get out and talk to people with no real substantive advice on HOW TO do that.

Before there was Facebook and Twitter, there was a thing called talking - actual face to face communication. In the book How to Start and Make a Conversation you'll learn how to talk to anyone in thirty seconds or less. You may think this is easy and just text somebody, but in the competitive business world, or just life in general, good communication skills are required.

The book's target readers will be mostly shy men and women who have a hard time getting up the nerve to talk to someone, but it can easily be used by students, teachers, business owners, etc. The author quickly takes you through the basic reasons of why conversation is important in our society. There are many reasons why someone can struggle with communications, like social anxiety, fear of rejection, self-esteem, etc. Throughout the book you'll learn about how important body language is; speaking to a stranger in thirty seconds or less; how to make small talk; how to leave a conversation; communicating at work; making friends; the romantic art of conversation; and learning how to communicate in the social media world.

This book sparked my interests because I have always been a shy person and, for the most part, avoided small talk. At a social or family event, I would just to into the other room and avoid the conversation. How to Start and Make a Conversation is a great read for shy people, or anyone who wants to brush up on their social skills. There are many helpful tips to get a person through an awkward situation, including starting conversations/small talk at work (even learn how to talk to your boss) and even starting a meaningful conversation on a first date. If you are having any sort of trouble communicating, need to brush up before that big job interview, or are just looking for topics to discuss on a date, then I would recommend this book.

"How to Start and Make a Conversation: How to Talk to Anyone in 30 Seconds or Less" by Chris Gottschalk is a book that is meant to help people who may be shy or awkward when starting a conversation with others.

Mr. Gottschalk covers many areas such as social anxiety, rejection, and self-esteem as possible barriers to some when it comes to conversation. He further delves into body language, making small talk, how to leave a conversation, how to have conversations with new friends and even how to ask someone on a date!

Mr. Gottschalk does a good job with breaking down the importance of conversation and how to overcome some of the difficulties people face when trying to initiate conversation. I liked that he covered how to talk with potential friends and romantic interests. And just as important and starting a conversation is the ability to end a conversation.

Although a lot of this is common sense, it helps to really understand what may be holding you back by seeing it spelled out in print. Mr. Gottschalk does not talk down to the reader but makes the reader feel understood. Do I think this book will change shy people over night? No. But it can help a shy person build up the skills to overcome their fears and make conversations more appealing.

For anyone who has had problems approaching and making conversation with others, they would definitely appreciate this book by author Chris Gottschalk. Written in a very laid-back and uncomplicated style, the book gives the reader all the ammunition they would need to not only strike up a conversation but to keep people's interest as well.
With e-mail being the preferred form of communication for some, Gottschalk is an advocate for face to face conversations. In 11 chapters he guides readers on making conversation with online friends, a boss and even your significant other.
In the first few chapters we learn about how communication skills can benefit our physical and social well being.
You would also read about how to start and master conversations, about social anxiety and even about how you can take control of a conversation. Elsewhere in the book is an interesting topic about "Non-starters - attitudes and tactics that can kill a conversation" which warns against arguing your point when having a conversation.
"The first step in order to avoid being argumentative is to realize that your opinions may not be perfect either," he writes.
"When someone has a different point of view than you, try to understand why he has that opinion instead of trying to disprove it. Ask questions about his point of view, and show a genuine desire to understand."
To illustrate his point on the importance of conversation, Gottschalk also quotes from psychologists and public figures such as Dan Quayle and Jackie Onassis.
Overall How to start and make a conversation is a good read and very informative. It's one of those books that you can apply to every aspect of your social life and one that will always be at your fingertips.
