The New Encyclopedia of Handguns & Small Arms explores the development of the hand weapon, via the invention of the percussion cap in the 1830s and the development of the smokeless nitrocellulose propellants in the 1870s, to the increasingly complex and diverse family of weapons manufactured from the turn of the century. These guns range from single shot personal defense pistols to the modern military personal weapons capable of high rates of fire with lightweight but lethal ammunition. Between these two extremes are sporting guns, revolver and automatic pistols, bolt-action rifles, automatic rifles, assault rifles, sub-machine-guns, light machine-guns, shotguns and riot control weapons. These have all played major roles into World Wars – and have contributed greatly to the evolution of modern society. The Encyclopedia of Handguns and Small Arms includes the following sections: Small arms up to the Napoleonic wars. Military and sporting weapons using matchlocks, wheel locks in flintlocks. From the percussion cap to nitrocellulose. The development of one piece ammunition, single shot weapons, magazine weapons with revolving chambers, weapons with combined magazine and bolt action, the smokeless battlefield and higher velocity ammunition. Modern small arms are born. The automatic pistol, the machine gun and the first automatic rifles developed from 1875 to 1914. The continuing story of the machine gun from 1914 to 1939; the arrival of the sub-machine-gun and the automatic rifle. 1939 to 1995 World War II and the growing importance of the sub-machine-gun in the assault rifle, and the postwar adoption of later weapons in the advent of the "bullpup" design." Sub-machine-guns, pistols and other weapons revolver and automatic pistols, civil rifles and shotguns for hunting and shooting, and right control equipment for state and individual use.

Text and illustrations in a seemly random arrangement make this book okay for the coffee table but a sorry excuse for reference material.

This is an example of the saying, "You can't tell a book by its cover." This book looked very interesting by the photograph on the cover, but turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment.

It is filled with good photographs and drawings of soldiers from numerous countries holding their rifles and handguns. The chapters include small arms up to the Napoleonic wars, from the percussion cap to nitrocellulose, modern small arms from 1914 to 1939 and from 1939 to 1986, sub-macine guns, pistols and other weapons. If you are seeking a book about pistols(handguns)there are numerous other books that focus specifically on those weapons.

In conclusion, this book is about rifles used historically in numerous countries, but says very little on actual handguns.
