When Paul Mellon died in February 1999 . Malcolm Warner, a former Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Center.

When Paul Mellon died in February 1999, he left the Center nearly three hundred paintings, sixty-four mostly small-scale sculptures, large numbers of drawings and prints, and a magnificent group of rare books. Among the highlights were eleven paintings by George Stubbs, eighteen oil sketches by John Constable, a small painting on copper by William Blake, and nine paintings, largely of equine subjects, by the early twentieth-century painter Robert Bevan. Malcolm Warner, a former Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Center, curated the exhibition, which was accompanied by a published illustrated catalogue.

Among Paul Mellon's achievements, however, were some that eluded general notice. One of the most remarkable of these was the amassing of a collection of rare books, maps, manuscripts, and drawings relating to the history of the Americas in general and of Virginia in particular. One of those aware of these efforts was the VHS's former director, John M. Jennings, himself an accomplished bibliophile. On occasion, Mr. Jennings gave advice on acquisitions to expand the library housed at the Brick House on the Mellon estate in Upperville.

John Baskett, Mr Mellon's life-long friend and art adviser, said the collectionwas so large that only a fraction of it was being hung. It's a very limited space in the Royal Academy. It's an exhibition you couldeasily have done six times over," he said. He was pleased Mr Mellon was being celebrated. Mellon's Millions: The Biography of a Fortune; the Life and Times of Andrew W. Mellon granted his extensive collection of British art, rare books, and related materials to Yale University in the 1960s, along with the funding to create an appropriate museum to house it (designed by Louis Kahn). He characteristically insisted that it not be named in honor of him, but rather would be called the Yale Center for British Art, to encourage others to support it as well. Mellon also provided extensive endowment support to fund not only operations but also an ongoing program of acquisitions, and he made a generous bequest to the Center at the time of his death. The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art was founded in 1970 through a generous grant to Yale University, as a London-based affiliate of the New Haven center, to encourage study of British art and culture both at the undergraduate and the research scholar levels. Mellon also provided important leadership gifts to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia, as well as Choate Rosemary Hall.
