A Study of Crisis is a monumental work on the causes, process, and outcome of conflict. Brecher and Wilkenfeld's Unified Model of Crisis has transcended the Levels of Analysis problem that has besieged international relations theory in the past. One person found this helpful.

Michael Brecher and Jonathan Wilkenfeld. In short, this is an outstanding quantitative, empirical study of a key aspect of international conflict. A comprehensive study of the causes and consequences of war in the twentieth century. J. M. Scolnick, J. University of Virginia's College at Wise, Choice, May 2001.

As the twentieth century draws to a close, it is time to look back on an epoch of widespread turmoil, including two world wars, the end of the colonial era in world history, and a large number of international crises and conflicts.

A pilot study was designed to evaluate the potential of zircon geochronology as a provenance indicator of till from the Lake Michigan, Saginaw, and Huron-Erie Lobes of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. There is no doubt that /ay/ monophthongization is one of the principal caricatures of US speech.

The authors explore many aspects of conflict, including the ethnic dimension, the effect of different kinds of political regimes (tably the question whether democracies are more peaceful than authoritarian regimes), and the role of violence in crisis management.

I came across this book while doing some research on the Mozambican war between Frelimo and Renamo and was utterly stunned by the overwhelming number of errors and sloppy "scholarship" found in the few pages that I examined. I can only imagine what the remainder of the book looks like!

The authors clearly have no factual knowledge of the Rhodesian bush war or the spillover conflict with Mozambique from 1976 onward. Just to cite a couple of errors: "Operation Thrasher" was NOT a Rhodesian cross border military operation conducted in early 1976 as the authors appear to believe, but was the name of the newly established Joint Operations Command (JOC) for Rhodesia's eastern frontier with a HQ at Umtali. JOC Thrasher was the central coordinating entity for COIN ops in this part of the country--never in Mozambique. Later on JOC Repluse would be establish (HQ at Ft. Victoria) for the southeast corner of Rhodesia. (Note: "Operation Hurricane" was the first JOC established in the northeast of the country.) Another example of sloppy work is what the authors called the "Nagomia" raid. No such place. The August 1976 raid by the Selous Scouts was against the Zanla camp at "Nyadzonya" (or Nyadzonia) along the river of same name. Hardly as clear cut with "300" guerrillas killed. At least 675 dead and over 1000 wounded. Many of those killed were reportedly women and children as a refugee camp was co-located with the military camp. Still very controversial.

And one could go on finding and citing pages and pages of problems with this book. Best to toss it in the trash. Or simply don't waste your money in the first place.

This book, which I without hesitation grade an A, got me an A on my political science exam. If you need background info on a crisis, what caused it, who were affected by it, actors, mediation, just about anything concerning a crisis, this is the book for you. A must have for anyone who's serious about political science, or anyone interested in conflict and crisis in the international system. Don't think I've ever run into a more helpful and comprehensive book on this subject, and the supplied semi-searchable database is superb!!!

A Study of Crisis is a monumental work on the causes, process, and outcome of conflict. Brecher et al., combine rigourous quantitative analysis with pithy qualitative research on the numerous conflicts (both protracted and non-protracted)with and without war, which have engulfed states throughout time. Brecher and Wilkenfeld's Unified Model of Crisis has transcended the Levels of Analysis problem that has besieged international relations theory in the past. This book is a must have for serious scholars of peace and war.
