This is a critical analysis of the history of the American Civil Liberties Union and at the same time the history of Am.Donohue provides the first systematic analysis by a social scientist. This book is directed at those interested in the history of American liberalism and, no less, the history of American conservatism, for ideological struggle within the United States touches directly on civil libertarian concerns. The work is especially significant for American constitutional lawyers, political scientists, and for those concerned with serious ideas in American life. Supporters as well as critics of the ACLU will be attracted to this work for different reasons.

5 The best summary of the ACLU's role is Norman Dorsen, The American Civil Liberties Union: An Institutional Analysis, Tulane . 6 An oft-cited criticism of the changing ACLU at a particularly critical juncture is Politics and the ACLU, in Joseph Bishop, J. Obiter Dicta (New York: Atheneum, 1971). 7 Murphy, Paul . World War I and the Origin of Civil Liberties in the United States (New York: W. W. Norton, 1979). 8 In fairness to Donohue, it should be noted that virtually every historian and biographer has been mystified by Baldwin's political odyssey.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1920 "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States". Officially nonpartisan, the organization has been supported and criticized by liberal and conservative organizations alike.

Following his book, The Politics of the American Civil Liberties Union, which argued that the group was not, as professed, above politics, LaRoche College (Pittsburgh) sociologist Donohue offers a flawed but provocative critique of what he calls the ACLU's "statism and libertinism. William Donohue thoroughly documents and perceptively analyzes both the socially destructive work of the American Civil Liberties Union and the threat to liberty presented by the extremist positions on individual rights ACLU propagates. This book is a much-needed antidote to pernicious trends in our national life. Robert H. Bork, American Enterprise Institute.

Perhaps these lapses only show again how difficult it is to live by the clear light of princi-ple. Yet, because what the Union seeks to do is so hard, a measure of charity would seem to be called for. It is valuable all the same, but I hope someday there will be a history of the ACLU that strikes a better balance between sympathy and indignation.

This is a critical analysis of the history of the American Civil Liberties Union and at the same time the history of American liberalism in the twentieth century. It represents the first published account of the ACLU’s record. Other works on the organization either dealt only with specific issues or have been simply journalistic accounts. Donohue provides the first systematic analysis by a social scientist.

The work is especially significant for American constitutional lawyers, political scientists, and for those concerned with serious ideas in American life. Supporters as well as critics of the ACLU will be attracted to this work for different reasons. It is unquestionably the most serious work now available and is likely to remain the touchstone for any such work for many years to come.

Do you know what organization argued against the censorship of religious materials being sent to detainees in the Rappahannock Regional Jail in Virginia? It was the ACLU which wrote a letter to the superintendent of the jail, asking that the jail cease the removal of Christian-themed materials and biblical passages from letters written to detainees. Do you know what organization argued for the right of Christian preachers to distribute pamphlets at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival in Lousiana? The ACLU wrote a letter to the mayor in support of the preachers, who had been ordered to stop handing out religious material. Did you know the ACLU filed suit on behalf of DC Christian, Muslim, and Jewish firefighters and paramedics who wear beards as a matter of religious observance? None of these topics were touched in Mr. Donahue's book. The fact is that the ACLU has done more not only for the free exercise rights of theists in general but conservative Christians in specific, then Mr. Donahue will ever do. Does the ACLU get credit? Of course not because it makes a good whipping boy in order to sell books for those who are taught to hate the ACLU. Would I agree with everything that the ACLU does? No, but its' record on ending segreation, right to adequate legal consul, right against forced confessions etc is equal to none in American politics. That is the real story of the ACLU.
