This is an outstanding and extremely complete book on the subject. It requires a very wide spectrum of understanding from the reader, as it ranges from paleontology to genetics, to probability, to neural plasticity, through evolution, experimental design, and reviews the psychology of many different species. Fits well with "Mindreaders: the Cognitive Basis for the Theory of Mind" and other, similar texts, and is a great foundation for additional reading if you can deal with its richness and density.

Bought this book for a summer course that required Edition 2. Edition 1 contains ALL the same material. If you need this for a college course, you just have to follow the chapter TITLES per your syllabus. The sequence of the chapters are different, but basically the material and chapter titles are the same. Saved a ton of money going with this edition.

I had to order this book for one of my capstone classes for psychology and I look forward to getting to use it. I will update it after the end of the semester.

Good writer, well-organized book with the ability to focus on the gist of a huge amount of data and varying facts. Just excellent.
