A decent primer for individuals beginning their study of Social Work. The earlier chapters focus on the history of the profession and the many different fields social workers may find themselves in. The latter half of the text focuses on social work practice in particular segments of the population (LGBT, African Americans, Mexican immigrants, people with intellectual / developmental disabilities, etc).

For people who love a thorough index, it is this reviewer's opinion that this textbook's topical index isn't as complete as one would expect. i.e. -- if the end of your chapter has a list of key terms, every single one of those key terms should be found in the back index with references to the pages where those topics are discussed. In my personal use, I found that this book was batting 800, which is better than many textbooks, but still not 1000!

Good book. However, it was tied to a website that cost extra to use. The book works as a stand-alone as well. Be aware that though it is 12th edition is a REVISED 12th edition so check carefully when you compare this to what is required for your class.
The book has a good amount of information to introduce people to the social work profession.
