I first encountered this book when I was in middle school and was in the library for a research project, and the one thing about it I always hated was it was a reference book - I couldn't check it out! Then, when I found it in a bookstore, I was only making babysitters wages and couldn't exactly shell out the $75+ I remember it cost. Finally, when I made enough money to buy it, it was out of print!

Thankfully, I found it online and I have been extremely pleased with the purchase. This book has inspired a lasting fascination with human psychology and the effect of fear. I recommend it for anyone who hopes to gain a greater insight to the human psyche.

Great reference book that is well organized and informative. It is absolutely perfect for my research project.

My use for this book is quite different than some of the other people who have written reviews. I am doing an ethnography project on haunted attractions and I used this book to gain a greater understanding of the many phobias people have. Unlike the many psychologists that have used this book I looked at how haunt creators tap into peoples' phobias and fears in order to make their experience more terrifying. The book basically contains exactly what you would expect. It gives thorough explanations of all the different fears phobias and anxieties. It also touches on the symptoms of certain disorders. It's an intriguing read even if you don't work in the psychological field.

While I am not a professional in this feild I have found this book remarkably help full in in understanding what these human behaviours are, the theories behind them, some of the medications that are/have been used in some cases and a few of the clinical studies that have been done in this feild.
The material is written in laymens terns and is arranged alphabtically. It would be of assistance to anyone wanting a better understanding of the feild or then student who is just starting their studies in college in this feild.
In my case the book has been and still is used in a most unusal way. I am referee for war gaming and have successfully used this referance with my players to prevent "perfect" characters from existing. The players in turn become so drawned to the book they wind up reading it and learning about this whole area!
This book would have recieved 5 stars except for the fact that the material is all listed as one listing: clinical, definitions, and Pharmacology (sp?). The book would have been better off as one book with several distinct sections.

i found this book to be immensely helpful, and i find myself returning to it again and again.

Not as clinical as I would have hoped. It includes entries for definitions for counseling and other basic descriptions.
