Botswana was undoubtedly the most successful economically and politically and retained the most open political institutions and the most distance from South Africa. Mozambican territory was raided by Rhodesia and South Africa in 1979, and this was followed by further South African attacks and the infiltration of the Mozambican National Resistance (Resistência Nacional Moçambicana; Renamo ), a brutal insurgency group established by Rhodesian intelligence services in 1976–77.
