Barbara Elizabeth Howard Sumner. The aim of this book is to teach basic principles and practice to complete novices in animal (including human) histochemistry. The book begins with essential definitions, followed by a brief resume of the origin and growth of the subject, and an outline of the general principles underlying histochemical methods. Then, after a special chapter devoted to basic methods for living tissue (which poses special problems), the rest of the book deals with basic methods for fixed tissue.

The relative distribution and density of three 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptor subtype mRNAs in female rat brain were investigated by in situ hybridization histochemistry using (36)S-labeled riboprobes.

We have shown previously that in ovariectomised rats, oestradiol-17beta, in its positive-feedback mode for luteinizing hormone (LH) release, induces a significant increase in the density of A (5-HT2A) receptors in the forebrain. The relative distribution and density of three 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptor subtype mRNAs in female rat brain were investigated by in situ hybridization histochemistry using (36)S-labeled riboprobes. Special attention was focused on the hypothalamus and other parts of the brain involved in neuroendocrine control.

The book may be considered as a guide to understanding the scientific basis of staining procedures and alternate actions .

The book may be considered as a guide to understanding the scientific basis of staining procedures and alternate actions to take when common methods do not proceed as expected. The first chapter gives general theoretical ideas from which most part of the book is largely organized around. As the book considers the arts and crafts making up the practice of histochemistry and biological staining, emphasis is given to the common physicochemical aspects of the technically diverse methodologies involved.

James Batcheller Sumner (November 19, 1887 – August 12, 1955) was an American chemist. He was also the first to prove that enzymes are proteins. Sumner was born on November 19, 1887 in Canton, Massachusetts.
