The African Great Lakes (Swahili: Maziwa Makuu) are a series of lakes constituting the part of the Rift Valley lakes in and around the East African Rift. They include Lake Victoria, the third-largest fresh water lake in the world by area, Lake Tanganyika, the world's second-largest freshwater lake by volume and depth, and Lake Malawi, the world's eighth-largest fresh water lake by area.
Read by Geoffrey Fryer. Nov 20, 2016 Ann rated it really liked it. This book presents the biology, ecology, and taxonomy of the cichlid fishes in the African rift lakes in great detail. There are sections on feeding and breeding, community structure, genetics, exploitation and speciation (always a hot topic).
The Cichlid Fishes of the Great African Lakes. Sexual selection and the evolution of the cichlid fishes of Lake Malawi. Allopatric processes of speciation have routinely been presented to explain the extraordinary radiation of the East African Great Lakes cichlid fish species flocks. The 21 or more species of pelagic cichlids within the Lake Malawi flock appear to have lake-wide distributions that challenge such a concept.
I have an experience of breeding African cichlids for more than 40 years.
