On March 4, 1967, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph and titular bishop of Thagamuta by Pope Paul VI. He received his episcopal consecration on the following April 3 from Bishop Charles Herman Helmsing, with Cardinal John Cody and Bishop Joseph M. Marling serving as co-consecrators. As an auxiliary bishop, he also served as vicar general of the diocese.
