PBB: An American Tragedy Chen, Edwin. This is the best book I've read on this terrible incident that the state government tried to sweep under the rug.

PBB: An American Tragedy Chen, Edwin. I have the other book by Egginton, but this one was written by the newspaper reporter that first broke the story, and I believe it to be a much better book. It is mind-blowing, a good lesson on what NOT to do in the event of a catastrophe of this kind. I would like to see Frontline do a investigative movie based on this book.

When An American Tragedy was being made into a movie in 1931, Dreiser attempted to force some changes in how the story was presented. During the correspondence in the dispute, Dreiser stated that his book constituted a violent attack on American society and American religion. What Dreiser disliked about American society at the time was not only its obsession with money but also the willingness of too many people to accept illusions about life instead of the truth.

We gather here in memory of twenty beautiful children and six remarkable adults. They lost their lives in a school that could have been any school; in a quiet town full of good and decent people that could be any town in America, the president began.

This was an interesting book although somewhat of a difficult read. I saw the movie about this incident and had to read more about it. It's amazing how a few human errors can result in such devastation. And to think that in my 50 years of living I never heard anything about this. It proves just how fragile our planet really is.
