Stem cells are special type of cells that have unique capacity to renew themselves and differentiate to give . Hence, they are the principal cells of all cell types. Stem cells can be embryonic, fetal, and adult or somatic types.

Stem cells are special type of cells that have unique capacity to renew themselves and differentiate to give rise to specialized cell types for many tissues. Cells can be reprogrammed artificially through the introduction of endogenous transcription factors by using viruses like retrovirus to produce iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells).

Background Stem cells are undifferentiated cells with a potential for self-renewal, which are essential to support normal development and homeostasis. To gain insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying adult stem cell biology and organ evolution, we use the telotrophic ovary of the beetle Tribolium.

Embryonic stem cells (ES cells or ESCs) are pluripotent stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, an early-stage pre-implantation embryo. Human embryos reach the blastocyst stage 4–5 days post fertilization, at which time they consist of 50–150 cells.

Unlike adult stem cells, embryonic, or pluripotent, stem cells are not restricted to any particular tissue or organ and are capable of producing all cell types.

Human embryonic stem (ES) cells capture the imagination because they are immortal and have an almost unlimited developmental potential (Fig. : How hESCs are derived). After many months of growth in culture dishes, these remarkable cells maintain the ability to form cells ranging from muscle to nerve to blood-potentially any cell type that makes up the body.

This volume will cover a series of reviews on stem cells including adult and embryonic stem cells. Speakers were invited to present these talks during the Stem Cell Symposia in fall of 2010, in Samsun, Turkey. Unique aspect of this volume is that it brings a multidisciplinary aspect of stem cells extracted from a symposium.
