Highly illustrated and extensively revised, Dr. Lawrence has gone to great lengths to provide the most current and up-to-date information on general surgery in this long-awaited Third Edition. This text follows the need-to-know information and objectives relating to specific diseases and areas of surgery that the Association of Surgical Educators has deemed essential for all physicians. New to this edition: multiple choice questions afford the reader an opportunity to prepare for the USMLE Step 2...Case Studies are presented in each chapter to help students to better assimilate the material...an Atlas provides detailed images of surgical procedures and disease states.

It suffices to say, that if you buy the General Surgery Essentials of...then you must also buy Essentials of Surgical Specialties...they go great together in particular when it comes to plastic surgery and Skin Surgery... The fundamentals are the fundamentals and both books are presented well...and are quite stackable so you can easily refer from one to the other if you need to briefly....like with Skin and Plastic Surgery... They are light weight and user friendly and not bogged down with too much information and are to the point and succint so you are not wasting your time overwhelmed with too much information...all the real life permutations are not presented so real life experiece you do need and that can not be replaced with just reading while you get the general picture...with specifics. So you get the general knowledge to which expound from and real life knowledge you must acquire...and then you make it applicable to other like or similar ideas... However, there are more advanced books out there I am sure...that prepare you better for other related specifics or surrounding issues or the same categories/class...simply through reading...so don't discard reading and experience in anything and everything we won't have time to gather experience...why walk in someone else's shoes when you can read about the shoes before the purchase...and read about specifications and appropriateness etc. Reading is frecuenlty faster with context and background knowledge.
Very good text book. I bought it for a nephew (14 yrs old) who is showing an interest in medicine and I would like to guide him toward surgery. He has all ready went through the anatomy and biology medical books I've provided him with excellent retention.
This thick book contains a good mix and great deal of information, but the writing style is terrible. At every step, the authors go to great lengths to use the most verbose and indulgent language possible. Cut all the fluffy verbiage out and you would have a considerably clearer book that contains 100% of the information in far fewer pages.

I would love to have the time to actually sit down and read this book properly. But a surgery clerkship simply does not afford enough time for that - there are simply not enough hours available when you work 15-17 hour days and were also hoping to eat and sleep. I cannot imagine why some clerkship directors feel that students should read this book. The only saving grace is that there are some 600 practice questions available on the publisher's website that you can access with the scratch-off code included inside the front cover.
Very informative book
Good book, five stars. Excellent resource.
Hard to read this over the course of a general surgery rotation due to bulk. All in all a decent book to just look up certain things that i have questions on.
Good surgical reference
A very dense read but if you want to know the whole picture of different surgeries then this is a great book
