The beta1-selectivity of three different beta1-blockers has been demonstrated in healthy volunteers using the blocking of biochemical and haemodynamic responses to a beta2 stimulus. Terbutaline alone caused an increase in heart rate, a rise in systolic blood pressure, a fall in serum potassium and a rise in both serum glucose and insulin. In this study, for both haemodynamic and biochemical responses, atenolol 100 mg had the greatest beta2-blocking effect, nebivolol 5 mg the least

The cardioselectivity and hypotensive properties of the beta 1-specific beta-blocker bisoprolol were investigated using a single-dose comparison of 10 and 20 mg bisoprolol, 100 mg atenolol, and placebo in 12 hypertensive asthmatic patients. The study was of a randomised four-way crossover design with 1 week's washout between each treatment. beta 1-Selectivity was determined by using lung function parameters-vital capacity (VC), airway resistance (AWR), peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), forced expiratory volume (FEV1)-at baseline and at predetermined intervals following each medication.
Comparison of Nebivolol and Bisoprolol for Cardiovascular Mortality in Hypertensive Patients. Intrinsic activity and β1-selectivity are important features of β-blockers in the treatment of patients with coronary syndromes and heart failure
Comparison of Nebivolol and Bisoprolol for Cardiovascular Mortality in Hypertensive Patients. Intrinsic activity and β1-selectivity are important features of β-blockers in the treatment of patients with coronary syndromes and heart failure. In human myocardium, intrinsic activity and β1-selectivity of the novel β-adrenoceptor antagonist nebivolol have not yet been determined. The study examines intrinsic activity, βein coupling and β1-selectivity of nebivolol and bisoprolol in human ventricular myocardium.
The 1-selectivity of bisoprolol has also been demonstrated in cloned human -receptors [160 . Bisoprolol reduces the basal and stimulated renin activity.
The 1-selectivity of bisoprolol has also been demonstrated in cloned human -receptors. In a study using membranes prepared from recombinant cells selectively expressing human 1- and 2-receptors, bisoprolol was found to have the highest selectivity for the 1-receptor of all the 1-blockers studied. The effect of bisoprolol 5 mg on glucose and potassium concentration was significantly less (p < . 5) than that of both doses of atenolol and the two other bisoprolol doses (10 mg and 20 mg) and not significantly different to placebo.
