This is a collection of short stories. The stories have a fantasy element to them mixed with a bit of romance and some drama.

My students read one graded reader a week of their choosing, and then give a 1-5 star rating of each book they read. This one has been their favorite above all others. It has consistently received 5 stars from all students who have read it. One of my students wanted to keep the book an extra week, so he could read it a second time. I also read the first story, and I found it very interesting.

If you need to choose a graded reader for an intermediate class, I would choose this one.

This book was written for ESL and EFL students. Most books of this type are boring and dull, but this particular collection is entertaining. I'm a native speaker who is accustomed to reading long, complex books, but I still found this book interesting enough that I read it all in one setting. The short stories all contain a twist or surprise, in the vein of Twilight Zone--in fact, a couple of stories are a little too reminiscent of that show and early science fiction short stories. Nonetheless, this is a great introduction to reading fluently and enjoyably in English. If you (as a teacher or a student) have only seen dull, stripped-down simplifications of classic novels as graded readers, give this a try. It's a pleasant surprise to find that "learner literature" can be engaging reading in its own right.
