According to the back cover, the series aims to ‘painlessly introduce students to the classic works of philosoph. y focusing upon an important text - situating the philosopher and the work in a historical context, considering the text in question and assessing the philosopher’s contribution to contemporary thought’. This is asking a lot, and McGinn has wisely concentrated on an immanent reading of the text.
