Catholic Bible Dictionary is an extremely useful tool for any Bible student, whether beginner or advanced. This dictionary is particularly helpful for Catholics who need both etymological studies of terms and solid theological help. My only hope is that the readers will study the articles on a regular basis and eventually read the whole dictionary as they study the whole Bible. This dictionary is a powerful part of that effort and will significantly help any reader learn more about the Bible in an organized and reliable way.

A Catholic Bible includes the whole 73-book canon recognized by the Catholic Church, including the deuterocanonical books. The term 'deuterocanonical' is used by some scholars to denote the books (and parts of books) of the Old Testament which are in the Greek Septuagint collection but not in the Hebrew Masoretic Text collection. Hoping to find an in depth explanation of the various Jewish laws concerning cleanliness, I flipped it open to section "C," and found an entry that reads "CLEAN AND UNCLEAN see Purification." So I turn to section "P," and search...and search. There is NO entry for "Purification." An unfortunate error in the editing or printing, which I hope future printings will correct. Also, under the entry for Ham (second son of Noah), Hahn says that his sin was maternal incest, not paternal incest, which is the prevailing scholarly opinion. Hahn's thesis is well supported, and easily available online, but I think it would have been more useful if he had included a synopsis in "The Catholic Bible Dictionary" as well; to my knowledge, he doesn't. For these reasons, I rate this book at four stars instead of five. But I want to stress that this book is still an invaluable resource. People who feel intimidated by its length or scholarly nature should begin with The Everything Bible Book: From Genesis to Revelation, All You Need to Understand the Old and New Testaments (Everything (Religion)), by Trigilio and Brighenti. Hahn's book covers all the same topics, but in much greater detail.

To those who have doubts about the book's orthodoxy (or lack thereof), The Catholic Bible Dictionary has an Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur; this means that nothing in it contradicts Catholic morals or dogma. Not to mention the fact that Scott Hahn is well known for his faithfulness to the Magisterium.

To at least one poster who was concerned about the lack of other contributors, I will quote from page xi, the book's acknowledgements: "The project has been very much a part of my life for a decade, and it has been a good excuse for close collaboration with colleagues...I would especially like to thank Dr. Matthew Bunson, Curtis J. Mitch, Dr. John Bergsma, Dr. Brant Pitre, and Christopher Bailey. Their hard work, expertise, and editorial assistance were indispensable." Also, Hahn is himself a professor at Franciscan University of Steubenville. To sum up: an orthodox professor, at an orthodox college, spent a decade compiling this book with the help of several orthodox colleagues, most of whom are also professors, and was granted leave to print it by two high ranking, orthodox clergymen. I wouldn't worry.

From every book in the Bible, to the meaning of words like "amen" and "hyssop", to the various nations and customs of the period, to the scriptural basis for various Catholic beliefs and practices, chances are good you'll find answers in this book. I highly recommend it.

Note: by "orthodox," I mean Catholics who are loyal to the teachings of the Church.

Haven't read it all but if you have the bible that goes with it it is a very valuable tool to have when it comes to learning about the bible, and ensuring you don't fall into the trap of self-interpretation of sacred scripture. Remember, each book, psalms, letters of the bible were written during different times of human history and by different people. You must take the time, environment, and style it was written in before interpreting scripture.

I just received my copy of the Catholic Bible Dictionary recently. I am a 52 yr old lapsed Catholic, who has been drawn closer to my faith from readings of the Bible, Saints, Apostles, etc.. This Dictionary, regardless of your individual faith, will open those books of the Bible that have been somewhat difficult to understand at times.
Some entries are about 3 sentences long; while others have, in the most incredible detail, pages of information about Christ as the Messiah, Apostles' Letters, Psalms, and so much more than I can list. The Catholic Bible Dictionary will lenthen the time of Bible Study, but with such joy! I can now read The Bible with greater understanding, clarity, and conviction than I ever have before. I believe all who purchase this product will be amazed at the amount of information gathered, marvel at their ability to follow the maps at the rear of the book, and find that each is richer for their understanding. I also believe that each will actually read with even more joy, The Holy Bible; find themselves reading for longer periods of time without realizing the amount of time that has gone by- SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH MORE THAT IS ABLE TO BE UNDERSTOOD!
The Catholic Bible Dictionary is the gift among gifts to be given to all. Confirmation, Marriage, Christmas...all would be the perfect time to give the Catholic Bible Dictionary to friends, family, or neighbors. Buy one for your local Parish. To have one available in the Parish Library for all to see will turn into a reason to buy one for ones' self and others. What better gift than to open the mysteries and beauty of God's word?

For anyone who reads the Bible, both Catholic and non-Catholic, this volume is extremely valuable. One is often confronted with a word or phrase that we think we understand; but do we really? For example: "The Garden of Eden." Prof Scott Hahn looks at this Garden from every aspect - from the physical location to the symbolic meaning of this earthly "paradise" where God is present. It is one of, if not the most, complete "encyclopaedias" related to every aspect of the Scriptures. For any student of the Scriptures or anyone interested in undertsanding the Scriptures this is a MUST reference book. For Catholics, as also for non-Catholics, it is important to know that the "Nihil Obstat" and "Imprimatur" declarations by Bishops of the Church means that the volume has been scrutinised and declared to contain no element at all that is in contradiction to the teaching of the Church and hence it may be published having the backing of the Catholic Church. Scott Hanhn is an extremely good writer and has a style of writing that is easy and interesting to read. Deacon A.(Tony) de Freitas PhD.
