This book is everything it says it is. The directory itself is absolutely comprehensive. If there's a school out there, chances are high that it's included here. The most elite schools are all included. Both boarding and day schools are included.

The data provided for each school is comprehensive as well, with everything from admissions data to college placement to expenses to founding dates. All of this information is presented in a well-planned, concise format that has been developed and refined over many editions. All of the schools listed in the "Leading Private Schools" directory include a brief narrative description too.

There is a range of entry types for the schools, from the most descriptive "school profiles" to the school directory of "Leading Private Schools", to the shorter "Concise School Listings" in the back. Most of the schools are entered into the "Leading Private Schools" directory. Only a small subset have gone all-out for the more detailed school profile, and most of the Catholic and other parochial schools have been relegated to the school listings in the back. Photographs are very few, for any school.

Potential readers should know that I found no evidence of an attempt to include for-profit schools of any kind, so if your school search includes those, you're out of luck here.

Of course, yearly data becomes immediately out of date with each season, but this is still a valuable guide for comparing the schools for the given year. It doesn't lose its comparative value within a few years. Unlike the Peterson's Guide, which contains many gaps, the schools themselves are committed to remaining absolutely current with this book. You know you have the latest available data in The Handbook.
