Free as in Freedom (. Good book to get know the history and origins of free as in freedom software and Stallman's character. It is a rare kind of biography, where the reader has the benefit of both the biographer's original words and the subject's response. However, smth of the author's pathos annoyed me.

ISBN-13: 978-0983159216. Why is ISBN important? ISBN. Richard Stallman has made it his life's goal to unshackle software users hands from the handcuffs software vendors try to place them in. Acting as the driving force behind the Free Software Foundation, Stallman has fought through licensing, activism, and education to set users free and abolish the 'us vs them' mindset that seems to permeate the software landscape between users and developers.

Free as in Freedom: Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software.

In 2002, Sam Williams wrote Free as in Freedom, a biography of Richard M. Stallman. In its epilogue, Williams expressed hope that choosing to distribute his book under the GNU Free Documentation License would enable and encourage others to share corrections and their own perspectives through modifications to his work. Free as in Freedom (2.0) is Stallman's revision of the original biography. While preserving Williams's viewpoint, it includes factual corrections and extensive new commentary by Stallman, as well as new prefaces by both authors written for the occasion. It is a rare kind of biography, where the reader has the benefit of both the biographer's original words and the subject's response

This book is perhaps the most revealing look at the man and his organization available today. In it, you'll find an in-depth look at Richard Stallman's childhood, and the events that molded him into the man he is today. Very well written and a must read for anyone interested in software freedom or Richard Stallman personally.

I read both English and French versions (Richard Stallman et la révolution du logiciel libre).

This book is a historical look on computing under the perspective of freedom, it helps to understand why the free software movement became a needed political cause nowadays, and why its impact on society is vital for the future!
This is also a historical biography of a great man, Richard Stallman, for many the philosopher of modern times even if he is not recognized as such. He always put philosophical principles at the very base of the free software movement...

Really a must read!
