To be fair, I was hoping for something like Isabelle goddard's Walking through glass which was very school. Earl was more of a bodice ripper. Okay if you like that stuff. I don't.

Six years ago, nobody had been surprised when Richard Veryan and Christabel Tallis had announced their engagement. Having grown up on neighbouring estates and known each other since childhood, theirs seemed like a match made in heaven. The young Christabel had always been fond of Richard but having had her head turned by a disreputable rake, she had begun to find her intended rather stuffy and boring. Deciding that she couldn't possibly contemplate spending the rest of her life with a man who didn't excite her, Christabel had called off their engagement and a heartbroken Richard had packed his bags and headed off to Argentina, where he had hoped to forget about his humiliation and Christabel's betrayal. Christabel soon realized that jilting Richard had been the worst mistake she could have possibly made, but with the man she had so carelessly rejected on the other side of the world, she had had no other choice but to live with the choice which she had made.

It had taken six long years for the ton to forget about Christabel's indiscretion. But although polite society is prepared to disregard her mistake, Christabel has never managed to forgive herself for causing Richard so much pain, heartbreak and misery. Having long since realized that no man will ever measure up to Richard, Christabel is thinking about accepting Sir Julian Edgerton's proposal. Although she doesn't love or particularly like Sir Julian, a convenient marriage is all that Christabel can ever hope for. But little does the beautiful young miss realize that a face from her past is about to storm back into her life!

After Christabel's betrayal, Richard had vowed never to set foot on British soil again. The death of his father, however, had forced him to swallow his pride, abandon the life he had built for himself in Argentina and to return back to England to take care of his mother and the family estate which has now become his responsibility. The last thing Richard wants is to meet Christabel again. He has tried so hard to forget about her, but no woman has managed to vanquish her from his mind. When Christabel and Richard finally clap eyes on one another again, all the feelings and emotions which they had tried so hard to suppress come flooding back with a vengeance!

Richard's mind is telling him to make Christabel pay for all the pain which she has put him through - but his heart is telling him to stop living in the past and to show the woman he has never stopped loving that she belongs with him! Is it too late for Richard and Christabel? Or will they get a second chance to put things right?

Isabelle Goddard is an outstanding writer of Regency romances. Her writing is sharp and crisp, her period detail evocative and authentic, her pacing zesty and fast-paced and her characters nuanced and believable. In The Earl Plays with Fire, she has penned a wonderfully compelling tale peppered with action, intrigue, passion and adventure which readers will not want to put down.

I adored Richard and Christabel's story and I was completely captivated by their dramatic, tempestuous and moving love story. I also very much enjoyed the two sub-plots in The Earl Plays with Fire, which complimented the story and never detracted from Richard and Christabel's romance.

Superbly written, fabulously romantic and immensely compelling, The Earl Plays With Fire is another triumph for Isabelle Goddard, a writer who I am sure is set to become a force to be reckoned with in historical romance!

Even though I'm not hugely into romantic novels, I thoroughly enjoyed The Earl Plays With Fire. Isabelle Goddard creates a masterly blend of romance and history so that you absorb the latter almost without being aware of it. Her characters are well portrayed and engaging and although, as in most romances, you can guess the outcome - the journey getting there twists and turns in an intriguing and engaging manner that keeps you hooked right up to the end. I grew up on Georgette Heyer and reading Ms Goddard's excellent novels I'm sure she did too!
