Hugh Ehrman, Kaffe Fassett and Candace Bahouth can be such fuss-budgets when it comes to patterns-often over-the-top flowery William Morris type designs. This book is much more in my desired area of inquiry: the history of the embroidered items.

Hugh Ehrman, Kaffe Fassett and Candace Bahouth can be such fuss-budgets when it comes to patterns-often over-the-top flowery William Morris type designs. It's weird but the very first photograph in the text is "Medieval Fantasy" which is a modern painting and the one after that is "The Arms of Miro," a woven tapestry from the early 1500's

This man and the people who create... or created for him ...just amazing.
I have learned a great deal through his advice and his choice of people who work or worked in his business as designers.
One, especially, Elian McCready, was - until her untimely demise - a tremendously exquisite designer of needlepoint. There was only one of her. She learned from Kaffe Fassett. And there is only one of him. Thanks to Amazon for having a zillion vendors with the highest of standards. Efficient service and delivery and appropriate packaging.

Beautiful book, inspiring to anyone learning about needlepoint. Has great designs of classic tapestry figures, clear descriptions of stitches.

Love the animal patterns. Best of all in the back is a very clear example of how to do the basketweave stitch. Beautiful book with lots of helpful information!

I understand the disappointment the first reviewer had about this book. Hugh Ehrman, Kaffe Fassett and Candace Bahouth can be such fuss-budgets when it comes to patterns--often over-the-top flowery William Morris type designs. This book is much more in my desired area of inquiry: the history of the embroidered items. It's weird but the very first photograph in the text is "Medieval Fantasy" which is a modern painting and the one after that is "The Arms of Miro," a woven tapestry from the early 1500's. There is also a 1613 portrait of the the 3rd Earl of Dorset, a crewelwork panel from the early 1700's, a needlework casket (box) from 1654, another painting from the 1480's and so on....What do these have to do with birds and beasts in NEEDLEPOINT you might ask. Well, it's about the history of the sources of the designs we like today.

You can't know where you are unless you know where you've been. If you study Tudor history and the history of needlework patterns and design sources, you'll much more appreciate the primitive mythological beasts that Mary Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick stitched in the 1570's. These are shown and discussed on pages 22-23. From all the sources discussed in the chapter entitled "Early Textiles," the authors were inspired to design 2 pillows, a griffin and a squirrel for you. I like it that the authors have researched through the centuries to display how birds and animals have been depicted in art and then created the 26 designs which are sorta kinda reminiscent of the artwork designs.

Frankly, I think it's bizarre that the authors closed with "Girl Punk" and "Boy Punk," 2 tapestries woven by Candace Bahouth in 1981. Ah, I see, the final project is a leopard skin pillow which is sort of like the border in "Girl Punk." Well...if you can just slide past the artsy-fartsy stuff....

I'm not inspired to do any of these projects. I don't even do needlepoint. But I like the flavor of this book in how it describes the fauna in design from the last 6 centuries. It's unfortunate that you can't get this information from the cover and publisher's description of the book itself. But then, that's what these reviews are for, hm?
Another great book full of charted patterns/designs. The colors are gorgeous and detail unsurpassed. The photography is exceptional and details of each project are not lacking in quality.
