Pretty much the standard early 70s thriller, it's a Bond novel with an American suave and debonair enough to seduce every woman, rich enough to be unimpressed by threats, and rough enough to do some (quite violent) damage to criminals across the globe. He's answerable to only one man, the President of the United States of America, and only because he really, really wants to defend his country-and the free world-against something called "Keyhole".

As this book makes clear, not all presidents understood the value and uses of the secret intelligence provided through CIA. Also the role of CIA as a purveyor of intelligence was muddied by its ability to conduct covert operations. On the other hand, in discussing intelligence intended "for the president's eyes only", Andrew also gives us a much broader backstage view of the behavior of our presidents during times of crisis.

This book is to spy novels what the Daniel Craig Casino Royale is to the older bond flicks - super slick, low-tech problem solving, edge of your seat suspense, and a rollicking good time! I first read this book many years ago, and upon my re-reading I am more astounded this was never made into a movie. It has all of the Bond-like evildoers, heroes, anti-heroes, and on top of all of that it is extremely well written! There are a few aspects that are a bit outdated given current technology and current exchange rates, but that is to be expected given the year in which it is written. This book is to spy novels what the Daniel Craig Casino Royale is to the older bond flicks - super slick, low-tech problem solving, edge of your seat suspense, and a rollicking good time!
