This memoir by a woman physician and educator whose life spanned the years before the 1917 Revolution and the Stalin era is a welcome addition to this literature. The author, Anna Zhukova Bek, grew up in an isolated mining village in Eastern Siberia where her father was the mine director. This book I enjoyed very much. I enjoyed reading about the struggles of a medical doctor in Siberia. I considered this a unique at the Siberian culture. The story reminds us of how deeply dreams and living them out are part of our common humanity regardless of country, culture or gender. As such it is a story that can and should appeal to general readers.
