Edwin P. Hoyt is a formidable and prolific historian, and "The Lonely Ships" is a good entry in his strongly-written books on World War II. This volume covers the tragic fate of the US Asiatic Fleet in the early days of World War II, which was based in the Philippines. They operated a small number of outdated ships against a more powerful and modern Japanese foe, and suffered two crippling blows at the start: the loss of their air cover in the Philippines and their major base at Cavite, near Manila.
