The Kindly Ones (1962) is a novel by Anthony Powell that forms the sixth in his twelve-volume sequence, A Dance to the Music of Time. The novel captures the dying fall of the period between the wars, relating the run up to the Second World War to the circumstances prevailing just before the Great War. Hints abound that the vulnerable are to suffer, just as those driven by force of will begin their advance.

Anthony Powell: Dancing to the Music of Time. He also explains the basis for each of Powell's novels, which, as a reader of these works, I found very interesting. Powell was a member of one of the most famous generations in British literature, thus, with this book, one gets a view of that group of people, as well as the environment that produced them. Powell's relationships with various members of the group make for some of the most interesting parts of the book. Barber does not cover Powell's marriage and his children is any but a cursory manner, and the book would likely have been better had that been more fully examined.

The Rest I’ll Whistle. A dance to the music of time.

Anthony Powell’s brilliant twelve-novel sequence chronicles the lives of over three hundred characters, and is a unique evocation of life in twentieth-century England. It is unrivalled for its scope, its humour and the enormous pleasure it has given to generations. The final three novels contained in this omnibus show Powell’s characters, old and new, now with the insights, maturity and obsessions of middle age. From a cultural conference in Venice to the decline and fall of Kenneth Widmerpool, it is a triumphant conclusion to a masterpiece of English fiction. The Rest I’ll Whistle.

Powell found inspiration for the title and form of his opus in Nicolas Poussin’s painting A Dance to the Music of Time, which depicts the Four Seasons dancing to music played by Father Time. The novels focus on social behaviour; all characters are dealt with objectively, as they would wish to appear to outside observers. Personality and motivation are revealed through minute and subtle analysis of disconnected incidents
