For most of the animals of Farthing Wood a new day was beginning. The sun had set, and the hot, moistureless air was at last cooling a little. In five years they’ve dug up all the grassland, and cut down three-quarters of the wood. There are human dwellings on either side of us.

For most of the animals of Farthing Wood a new day was beginning. It was dusk, and for Badger, time for activity. Leaving his comfortable underground sleeping chamber, lined with dry leaves and grass, he ambled along the connecting tunnel to the exit and paused, snuffling the air warily. Moving his head in all directions, his powerful sense of smell soon told him no danger was present, and he emerged from the hole.

I’m so glad this book (and the rest of the series) is available for Kindle; I so loved them growing up, and still do! The story follows a motley group of woodland animals as they make a long, hard journey across England to find safety in a nature reserve. They must learn to work together in spite of their many differences in size, skill, and personality. The story teaches teamwork, loyalty, friendship, courage, and respect for life. Some of the animals do die along the way (so, probably not good for very young children) but there is nothing gory, and no profanity or bad language.

Children and adults alike will enjoy this series. The later books follow the animals’ adventures after they arrive at the Park, though the original cast of animals dwindles with each book, as some of them die of old age or other causes. However, some of them do make it all the way to the end of the last book (I won’t spoil it by saying which ones!).

There is also a prequel (“The Adventure Begins”), which follows how Farthing Wood began to be destroyed and the animals’ early decisions about their future. Or rather, the animals’ parents’ decisions, as most of the cast of the Farthing Wood series hasn’t been born yet at the time of the prequel.

I often wondered where the stories of heroism, intelligence and good morals went. Luckily I happened upon this beloved story about how a group of very different forest animals are forced to work together and take care of one another, despite their individual faults and differences. This story not only teaches good morals, but also about strength, endurance, compassion and love for the animals in our forests.

I first read this book many years ago and had lost the book, couldn't remember the title, etc. It is a wonderful story of animals being displaced and traveling to a new home. How they got along, made decisions and helped each other was delightful. I never see an animal crossing a road that I don't think of this book. Good reading to children a chapter a night.

I first read this book when I was about 11 and simply was enthralled by it. I now own it so I can share it with my younger relatives. The author does an amazing job of sweeping the reader into the story so you feel like you are making the journey with the animals. Enjoy!
