Play a Lone Hand - Luke Short. 1. For the second morning in succession Cass Murray stood in the rear doorway of his livery and watched the young man washing up at the water trough by the corral. This obsession with cleanliness brought no judgment from Cass: he knew a hayloft was no sort of bed, and it was only plain comfort that pushed a man into shaking the chaff out of his shirt and washing the dust from his body after a night there. It was the man’s modesty that troubled him. His back to the livery, the young man was washing his upper body in a furtive and hurried way, almost as if he were.

Play a Lone Hand book. A Luke Short western about a man who is dry hunched and left for dead. He recovers and finds he is broke and destitute with no hope for immediate release. When the agent finally descended, Sheriff Edwards went forward immediately, holding out his hand.

1. When the agent finally descended, Sheriff Edwards went forward immediately, holding out his hand. Seeing him move, Giff remembered suddenly that the agent had written Edwards, and he thought bitterly, Then my job will last two minutes longer. The agent was a stocky man in clean range clothes, and his smile was easy, almost professional as he shook Edwards’ hand. His ruddy, loose face held a careless affability and the easy charm of the politician.

This is the first western that I can remember reading. I selected Luke Short because during research it was said his stories had a nourish quality and as fan of film and fiction noir I thought this would be to my liking, and it was. The main character is an outcast, a loner, but tough. There is an attractive woman that might have a tinge of shady past herself. And of course bad guys. I enjoyed the crisp writing, the characters, and the story was well paced, weaving together action, mystery, and of course the outcast beating the odds. I will read more Luke Short.

A great western like they used to write them. Luke Short's characters have grit with lots of action.

Like another outstanding Western by Luke Short called "Ambush", this story has plenty of fast-paced action and is a well-told, satisfying story. Although I am also a fan of Louis L'Amour, I find Short's stories grittier and more realistic, maybe even more authentic.

The copy I own is identical to the one pictured in the ad, and the blurb on the back states: Luke Short's bullet-paced novel of a man with nothing but his raw nerve nd a hot, bitter need for justice. Perhaps an exaggeration, but his novels are fast paced and filled with the kind of violence that did indeed inhabit the West of the 19th century; and the one man struggle against man, nature, or self, was the daily norm. A lot of the time you were alone; you had no one to rely on, to count on, to help you in those struggles. And when you are a drifter as Giff Dixon was with no horse, no gun, no saddle, or money when it came time to either run or stay sometimes it was pride which pushed the decision. And when pushed too far that pride was what kept him in town to fight the battle against the land grabbers. Luke Short's books are easily read and understood, and highly entertaining. They are authentic as to time and place and action. I highly recommend this one.
