...do same yourself some $$$ by purchasing as part of a collection like Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection ASIN: B01JVMOOPE, His Last Bow: Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes (Illustrated) ASIN: B00O56MUF8 or Sherlock Holmes: The Ultimate Collection ASIN: B01HQDYF72

This book includes snippets of several Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tales with handy links from the table of contents so you can read them in any order you choose. Just enough to give you a flavor for how well the man wrote (including the popular phrase from which I took my title) but I'm certain you'll want to own the stories in their entirety so best to grab yourself a a collection comprising 1000+ pages for an equivalent sum that you can really sink your teeth in I would think.

The contents of the book are just fine- another great collection of Holmes short stories. This edition however is missing The Adventure of the Cardboard Box. Also there's not even page numbers which is just annoying. I've bought a few of the different Holmes books from various publishers and the cheaper version like this don't have illustrations, historical notes or a glossary of Victorian English, the omission of the page numbers makes this one of the weaker editions of even the cheap publishers. However, if you can live without all of those things, this is a great book at a very cheap price.

It is almost impossible to read Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories in any sort of chronological order. There are people and Sherlockian societies that devote a great deal of thought to Holmes chronology.

Personally I believe that the right place to start is "A Study in Scarlet" and most I am sure would agree and that this collection should be the last. One issue is that it is confusing to know just when Watson was married and when he resided at 221 Baker but one could enjoy the stories in any order. Still, I think it best to try to follow some sort of chronology.

In the original Star Trek episodes star dates were random, so one never quite knew the chronology of events, but there was at least, some attention to consistency. I guess the writers took a cue from Conan Doyle.
