The Met's celebrated European Paintings collection encompasses more than 2,500 works of art from the thirteenth through the early twentieth century. Apart from individual masterpieces by artists as diverse as Jan van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Gustav Klimt, The Met possesses a rich display of early Italian and Northern art, along with one of the world's greatest collections of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, including outstanding works by Frans Hals, Rembrandt, and Johannes Vermeer. The Museum's holdings of El Greco and Goya are the finest outside of Spain.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially "the Met", is the largest art museum in the United States. With 6,953,927 visitors to its three locations in 2018, it was the third most visited art museum in the world. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments.

Publisher: Metropolitan Museum of Art (January 4, 2008). The museum is renowned for its impressionist and post impressionist masterpieces so it is no surprise that the centerpiece is filled with Auguste Renoir's portraits, Claude Monet's landscapes, Edgar Degas' ballerinas, Paul Gauguin's Tahitian scenes, and Paul Cezanne's still lifes. Highlighted as well are the works by many other notable French painters such as Jean Dominique Ingres, Eugene Delacroix, Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Jean Leon Gerome, Edouard Manet, Pierre Bonnard, and Henri Matisse.

Introducing the publication, Claus Virch, Curator of European Paintings . The book should appeal to a wide range of readers, both as a splendid sample of the Metropolitan's paintings collections and a stirring reminder of great achievements in art across a span of nearly seven centuries.

Introducing the publication, Claus Virch, Curator of European Paintings, gently warns persons who may unconsciously, through conditioning in our world of superabundant illustrations, settle for a color reproduction in place of the real thing. A book such as this, he notes, first of all hopes to prepare its "readers" for confrontations with the actual paintings. Second, it hopes to guide or refresh memories of the actual paintings.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the most complete collection of European nineteenth century art in America. This beautifully illustrated catalogue was published on the occasion of the opening of its newly refurbished nineteenth century and early School of Paris painting galleries. Besides a book of large color reproductions , it serves as a great introduction to approximately seventy famous and lesser known painters from nine countries. However, French artists are the best represented. Joseph Mallard Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, Christen Kobke, Ilia Repin, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Amedeo Modigliani are just a sampling of the featured non-French artists. Some of the museum's most iconic pictures presented in the main colorplate section are Rosa Bonheur's "The Horse Fair", Manet's 'Boating", Renoir's "Madame Charpentier and Her Children", Cezanne's "Mont Ste. Victoire", and Picasso's portrait of Gertrude Stein. There is also an interesting introductory essay on the formation of the collection. Although I loved the book, I was slightly disappointed that the authors omitted some other noteworthy artists like Johan Barthold Jongkind, Giovanni Boldini, Joachin Sorolla, and Alfred Stevens. If they were included, it would have been the perfect representation of the department. Despite a minor flaw, I still strongly recommend this museum publication if you want to learn about the art of this period.

Excellent.

This is a large, beautifully made book. The images of the paintings are rich and vibrant, and the text accompanying each painting is insightful and educational, without being boring.
