Report for Murder introduced the United Kingdom's first lesbian detective, and the series has been perennially popular . McDermid has been praised for the way her storytelling interweaves the various elements of the novel into a seamless, balanced whole.

Report for Murder introduced the United Kingdom's first lesbian detective, and the series has been perennially popular ever since. Lindsay is tenacious to the point of stubbornness, intrepid to the point of stupidity, and loyal to the point of laying her life on the line. With the support of friends, family, and lovers, she takes on the world with wit and brio, unraveling criminal conspiracies and unmasking murderers. I don't write about issues, I write about characters, McDermid says.

Praise for V. L. McDermid. If you haven’t discovered this award-winning trailblazer in lesbian detective fiction you’re missing out on a good one. Katherine V. Forrest. There is no one in contemporary crime fiction who has managed to combine the visceral and the humane as well as Val McDermid.

Jobless in Glasgow, Lindsay Gordon makes friends with a young freelance journalist Rory McLaren. But when a local car-dealer's stepson is kidnapped, Lindsay and Rory are invited to trade journalism for detection. The trail leads them to St Petersburg and a dangerous snatch-back operation. It becomes clear that Lindsay and Rory have stumbled into a bigger, more violent piece of business than either of them could have guessed.

Lindsay Gordon put murder to the back of her mind and settled down in the train compartment to enjoy the broken grays and greens of the Derbyshire scenery. Rather like home, she decided. Except that in Scotland, the greens were darker, the grays more forbidding.

Val McDermid grew up in Kirkcaldy, a small mining community on the east coast of Scotland and studied English at Oxford University. The books she has written featuring Tony Hill and Carol Jordan have provided the basis for the popular "Wire on the Blood" television series, while her novels have won a number of awards, including the Macavity award, the Anthony Award and Grand Prix des Romans d'Aventure. On the whole, I'd describe "Common Murder" as a very quick and easy read - though McDermid's done much better than this. There's nothing special or memorable about the storyline and there's nothing particularly engaging about the characters.
