This book was great for my crisis intervention class in marriage and family therapy grad school

by Richard James Richard K. James (Author). This book was great for my crisis intervention class in marriage and family therapy grad school. It is easy to read, goes in-depth about crisis intervention strategies and I have even used it after graduating as a reference.

Likewise, I'm sure Richard K. James is also a fine person, but neither of them can write dialogue that resembles a conversation in the 21st.

Crisis Intervention Strategies-here's a topic counselors need to be as current on as possible. One of the co-authors, Burl E. Gilliland, died in 2004. Likewise, I'm sure Richard K. As required for licensure, I used this text for the mandated Crisis Intervention post-master's course. In addition to basic mental health crisis intervention, the book primarily focuses on crisis response, crisis planning, and other concepts introduced to the general public by FEMA and HRSA after the events of 9/11.

I suppose if you are not familiar with the planning component, and do not want to take the time to search through the free FEMA and Red Cross files on the net, you'll have a brief, one-stop shopping experience with this text. And, I also suppose this is "stuff" one should probably know for administrator level position within human service organizations. However, be warned...this is great theory that academics want you to know. But in the real world, the plan in written and put on a shelf.

I enjoyed this textbook because it gave examples of conversations between a crisis worker and an individual in crisis. The information in the book was informative, had many references to state, federal, and national organizations, and related to real-life situations. I do wish the actual interventions were easier to find in the book. Like, "here's the 6-step intervention and these are the steps". I think the 6-step intervention was actually the one intervention that was spelled out like that. The others were kind of mixed in with the chapter and had to be piecemealed together.

This book is awesome. It gives technique and examples of how to handle situations, scenarios, background, etc. I can't put it down.

Would recommend for any one who is interested in being a crisis intervention worker. This author breaks it down for easing understanding.
I am reading this book for an online class I'm taking for my license clinical addictions specialist. I am very impressed with the level of expertise of the author, as well as his sense of humor. I'm learning a lot.
