Neal Town Stephenson (born October 31, 1959) is an American writer known for his works of speculative fiction. His novels have been categorized as science fiction, historical fiction, cyberpunk, postcyberpunk, and baroque. DD: With "hysteria," I sense you're making a connection between erotic literature and women’s religious ecstasies in the middle ages. There is a bit of that religious, almost chant-like recitation pace to the readings, as the subject battles her body for control. DD: Song of Myself is a queer text as well as an erotic one. Are you using men or transgender participants in this study? While I'm open to men and transgender subjects for something similar, I don't know if they'd be quite perfect for this series, lacking the historical connections to the conceptual tie-in with medical hysteria.
