Lawrence Durrell was a novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer. Although a British expatriate, he never settled in Britain and lived much of his life in the Provence region of France. His most famous work is the tetrology The Alexandria Quartet. I read the Alexandria Quartet some four or five years before I spent a year in an Egyptian university and began a lifetime of appreciation for the resilient Egyptian spirit. In short, I was less than prepared to appreciate it or its author. White Eagles Over Serbia is not the same sort of book. It may in fact be the lightest reading of all of Durrell’s works. But it engages, captivates and entertains.

Lawrence George Durrell (/ˈdʊərəl, ˈdʌr-/; 27 February 1912 – 7 November 1990) was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer. He was the oldest brother of naturalist Gerald Durrell. Born in India to British colonial parents, he was sent to England at the age of eleven for his education.

Durrell constructs his boo In this dreadful book, Lawrence Durrell fails in the one thing he was good at; taking sides in a political controversy. He gives us Methuen a dashing British Spy who is irresistibly drawn to danger. He has a manipulative boss and a charming stable of sidekicks. The Alexandria Quartet among other things is a great rallying cry in support of Israel while in Bitter Lemons, Durrell in magnificent fashion pleads the case of the Greeks in Cyprus. In White Eagles Over Serbia Durrell very dishonestly refuses either to endorse or to denounce England's policies towards Tito's communist regime in Yugoslavia.

said the portly first secretary, joining the tips of his fingers together and pouting. Nevertheless he has asked to see you. I feel I must warn you, however, that he very much doubts. Yes aid Methuen mildly. The first secretary pressed a bell and lifted his desk-telephone. Marriot here, sir, he said. The receiver cracked shrilly. I would like to bring Mr. Judson up to yo. .In silence they walked across the large carpeted Chancery where the six young secretaries bent to their work in silence, across a dismal looking hall-way, to the lift.

Lawrence Durrell was born in 1912 in India. He attended the Jesuit College at Darjeeling and St Edmund's School, Canterbury. His first literary work, The Black Book, appeared in Paris in 1938. Durrell's wartime sojourn in Egypt led to his masterpiece, The Alexandria Quartet, which he completed in southern France where he settled permanently in 1957.
