Leo Rose called it a "special pleading" rather than a scholarly work, that presents the Chinese position extremely well. Lamb points out rightly than China had never ratified the Simla Convention that defined the McMahon Line but he dismisses the question of whether the British and Tibetan governments were competent to conclude an agreement. The McMahon Line and After: A Study of the Triangular Contest on India's North-Eastern Frontier between Britain, China and Tiber, 1904-47. The "forgotten chapter" is a neat quarter century in the story of the northeast frontier of India following the conclusion of the abortive tri-partite Simla Conference (1913-14): while British India and Tibet had signed and sealed the compact, the Chinese having initialed, refused to proceed to full signature. Interalia, the Convention had resulted in the delimitation of the North-east frontier along what came to be known later, after the British Plenipotentiary, as the McMahon Line.

His discussions of the Simla Conference (for which he became broadly known after he published The McMahon Line and After: A Study of the Triangular Contest on India's North-Eastern Frontier between Britain, China, and Tibet, 1904-47 (MacMillan, 1974), for example, and his discussion of the 1962 Sino-Indian War are important contributions to the field and no current. historian can write about these events without consulting Mehra.
