Paitarkiutenka offers greater detail about working with wood, kayak construction, and coastal hunting

Paitarkiutenka offers greater detail about working with wood, kayak construction, and coastal hunting. Stories and information on seasonal activities in the Canineq area appear here for the first time. This book acknowledges the enormous amount of information and remarkable skills that each individual needed to live life on the Bering Sea coast; it is Frank Andrew's legacy to us all.

Yup'ik elders of southwest Alaska recall, ?Our ancestors were never heavy with a tool ki. They carried in their minds what they needed to live rich lives in the harsh environment of the Bering Sea coast. Frank Andrew, Sr. (1917-2006), was one of the few elders to bring this knowledge into the twenty-first century.

The book itself is incredible. I absolutely adored the stories in it, the poems & i loved the inserts & enclosures. They made the book so special, the one flaw was that my purchase was a used item cause they don't produce this book anymore. It was missing one insert, i shouldn't be complaining about that but still. it would've been great to have all of the inserts.

Chorus Don't you mess with my legacy I’m all fired up, I got all I need Don’t you mess with my legacy ‘Cause I'mma be blowing up I’mma be blowing up Show respect and integrity ‘Cause I'm right where I'm supposed to be Don't you mess with my legacy Cause I’mma be blowing up. I'mma be blowing up In your face like.

The world of Frank Andrew and his wife was one during which great change occured. Their skill in guiding their family through this time is one based on their own faith in their own identity. His words of advice are useful to individuals of all cultures. We too live in a world of great transition and change. His world changed dramatically but his trust in the life philosphies of his ancestors were something he trusted and something that added stability to his life and that of his family. We live in a changing world and it is the knowledge of elders like Frank Andrews that can guide us through all major cultural changes. Ethics and standards of behavior are all necessary for long term survival of any family. Yupik individuals who chose to discard their values and standards because they were not "modern" paid a high in Western Alaska. Alcohol and drugs ate up whole families while those like Frank's family who listened and trusted their traditional ways and beliefs not only survived difficult times but often thrived. I lived in Bethel throughout the 70's and as a "kasseq" (white man) I found that the words of elder like Frank Andrew and Tom Kashotak offered me the guidance that I needed in this rapidly changing world. Tom was my mentor and unfortuantely many of his words have been lost. It plesese me that the words of other elders have been saved for all of us. Thank You Richard E. Wisecarver

This was a well-received gift. I don't know whether it is being read.
