Independent Film Making was the bible. Lenny, also famous for penning the lyrics to "Puff the Magic Dragon," took the word "independent" seriously.

I was a film production student at a New York City college that had ABSOLUTELY NO 16MM equipment to work with...so all I know about it comes from THIS BOOK and some professional experience as a documentary narrator. Today's filmmakers, whether they're working with video or film equipment, should have this on their library shelves. It's a great reference book and it's written in a user-friendly style. Lenny Lipton's companion tome, "THE SUPER 8 BOOK", along with this work, are the two "bibles" I have used when working in what is now a "dinosaur" part of the business. "INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING" still contains a vast amount of pertinent information on equipment and technique. It also serves as a "time machine" into the history of traditional and avant-garde filmmaking. Some of the names from this book became familiar when I took a course called "Experimental Filmmaking" a year later. I am sorry that I cannot locate my original copy of this book which is lost in storage but if it turns up I will gladly donate it to a public library system for someone else's enjoyment. If Mr. Lipton ever writes a companion video production book you can be sure I will have a first-edition copy in my library. I am thrilled to have found a "lost treasure" once again. It will come in handy if I get a future video production teaching position.

This book is good if I only was into filmmaking back in the 1980's! All of the written information are on film obviously as the book is written back in the days, however I would consider this as a film history book or a film reference book.

If you are looking for books on nowadays film techniques, this one is definitely NOT what you are looking for!

This book provides a short chapter (about 40 pages on the average) of all the technical major aspects of filmmaking (using film, not video). Chapter include every aspect of filmmaking and are more geared to technical issues than "artistic". Chapters are well written, succinct and informative. Excellent introduction for beginers to the art of filmmaking.

The strengths of this book, in my opinion, is the well rounded coverage of technical issues regarding film production. This is not one of those guides which convinces you that it can squeeze scriptwriting, production, casting, postproduction, distribution, and even film appreciation (by giving you a "favorite films" list at the end of the book). This book deals almost completely with technical terms and techniques, which is probably the only issue in filmmaking that can be sufficiently covered in one book. Ofcourse, you will need on hand training, but you can always get your hands on a good old 16mm soviet camera for around $150 or a super8 camera for next to nothing (I did). This books only faults: It's a bit old (1972) and visually it's a bit dull (though there are plenty of b&W pictures and charts). I enjoyed Lipton's rather intimate writing: it feels a lot more like an literal explaination than a textbook.
