Sébastien Bourdon (2 February 1616 – 8 May 1671) was a French painter and engraver. His chef d'œuvre is The Crucifixion of St. Peter made for the cathedral of Notre Dame. Bourdon was born in Montpellier, France, the son of a Protestant painter on glass. He was apprenticed to a painter in Paris

Bourdon does not seem to have encountered Poussin’s art in Rome, and he remained largely insensible to its influence until the 1640s; but Poussin’s brief visit to Paris between 1640-42, had a profound impact on the younger artist, who upon seeing the master’s works, turned increasingly to landscapes and monumental religious compositions with rigorously defined planes, Poussinesque figural.

Overlooked by Jacques Thuillier, Sebastien Bourdon 1616-1671: Catalogue Critique et Chronologique de L'Oeuvre Complet, Paris, 2000, despite the provision of photographs by the museum, (also omitted from rejected works). The R. W. A. loaned K1090 on a long-term basis to Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery before its acquisition.
