ROME (AP) Dora Jane Hamblin, who traveled from India to the Yukon as a correspondent for Life magazine, died of a heart attack at her retirement home near Rome, a friend said Wednesday. She was 73. Hamblin, who died Tuesday, joined Life at the end of World War II and became its Rome bureau chief in 1956. She retired in 1970 to Trevignano, a lakeside resort north of Rome, but continued to write, mostly for the . based Smithsonian Magazine, on topics ranging from excavations in Saudi Arabia to gondolas in Venice. She wrote seven books, including ″Birds, Cities and Ancient Treasures,″ a tourist guide on Turkey.

Hamblin, known as Dodie, began at Life in 1947. Nor, to split hairs, is this book technically volume one. After stints in the bureaus of Chicago and London and Paris, she ran the one in Rome. She covered spacecraft launchings, politics and fashion openings (though the latter, as a funny story in Chapter 10 shows, were not her preferred milieu). on the subject of a great magazine, as Hamblin's preface says, though the others are out of print.
