Are you sure you want to remove Toby, the Tram Engine (Railway Series) from your list? Toby, the Tram Engine (Railway Series). by Reverend W. Published August 1986 by Heinemann Young Books.

The Railway Series is a series of children's books about the railways of the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were created by the Reverend W. Awdry, who wrote the first stories in 1943. He penned twenty-six books from 1945 to 1972. A further sixteen books were written by his son Christopher Awdry. The final book in the series, Thomas and his Friends, was published in 2011. The series formed the basis for Thomas & Friends, with many of its books and stories being adapted for television.

A list of The Railway Series books by both the Rev. Awdry and his son Christopher. The first 26 books in the series were written by Rev. Awdry, who is sometimes mistaken as the sole writer. Book no. 1. Published 12 May 1945. Illustrated by William Middleton, later by C. Reginald Dalby.

Toby the Tram Engine is a fictional anthropomorphic tram engine in The Railway Series by the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry and his son, Christopher; he also appears in the spin-off television series Thomas & Friends. Toby, a tram engine with cowcatchers and sideplates, carries the North Western Railway running number seven and works on the same Ffarquhar Branch Line as Thomas the Tank Engine.

Ironically, this seventh book of The Railway Series introduced the #7 brown tram engine, Toby! (Now the whole "Steam Team" from the television series has been introduced, with the exception of Emily. Poor Emily is the only Steam Team member who wasn't created by the Rev. Awdry, and never appears in The Railway Series! She finally arrived on the TV series in 2003.) Henrietta is new in this book as well, and they join Thomas, James, Percy, Annie & Clarabel, Sir Topham Hatt and other human friends in a series of four stories within this book (Toby and the Stout Gentleman / Thomas in Trouble / Dirty Objects / Mrs Kyndley's Christmas). We always enjoy how we're welcomed in with the forward: "Dear Friends, Poor Thomas has been in trouble. So the Fat Controller asked Toby to come and help run the Branch Line. Thomas and Toby are very good friends. Toby is a funny little engine with a queer shape. He works very hard and we are fond of him. We hope you will like him too. The Author". We also love the old-fashioned feel of these books, and their small size (@ 4 1/2"h x 5 3/4"w), which is perfect for smaller hands. It was first published in 1952, and this edition was first published in 2002. Our older grandson was about 2 1/2 when he became completely infatuated with Thomas, which led Grandpa and I to beginning our first collections for him... trains, annuals, but - first and foremost - The Railway Series!

There are 42 books in the series, the first 26 written by the Rev. W. Awdry, with the remaining 16 written by his son, Christopher (for whom the books were begun in the first place!) Our older grandson (almost 6 now) still enjoys his collections, but his younger brother (closing in on 2) is already showing strong interest - with another grandchild due in September, the Thomas collections have been a great investment for us.

If you're not looking to start a collection, read no further, but if you think you'd like to, we'll save you the trouble of looking up all of the titles. I'll list them in the "comments" below.
My son loved it!
