Anselmo d'Aosta, noto anche come Anselmo di Canterbury o Anselmo di Le Bec, è stato un teologo, filosofo e arcivescovo cattolico franco, considerato tra i massimi esponenti del pensiero medievale di area cristiana. Anselmo è noto soprattutto per i suoi argomenti a dimostrazione dell'esistenza di Dio; specialmente il cosiddetto argomento ontologico ebbe una significativa influenza su gran parte della filosofia successiva.

c. 1033 Aosta, Kingdom of Burgundy. Anselm was born "Anselmus Candiae Genavae" (Italian: Anselmo di Candia Ginevra), in Aosta in the Kingdom of Arles around 1033. His family was related by blood to the ascendant House of Savoy and owned considerable property. His parents were from a noble lineage and holders of fiefdoms within the Burgundian territories Anselm undertook to explain the rational necessity of the Christian mystery of the atonement.
