Harry Golden, through nearly 20 books, has rambled back and forth across his own history and times, an inexhaustible, shrewd, matzo ball philosopher, breezy, deeply unruffled and garrulous. He is also liberal, funny, concerned, indulgent and relaxed. Perhaps this other traveler through Jewish America supplied the considerable data, the organized history of Jewish communities, or maybe he just took care of hotel reservations and tickets he is somewhat buried under the ashes of Harry Golden's cigar. The book is filled with delicious anecdotes that belong with port and nuts, or bagels and coffee, and Harry Golden beaming through the smoke over goon gossip with friends.

Harry Lewis Golden (May 6, 1902–October 2, 1981) was an American Jewish writer and newspaper publisher. He was born Herschel Goldhirsch in the shtetl Mikulintsy, Ukraine, then part of Austria-Hungary. In 1904 his father, Leib Goldhirsch, emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, only to move the family to New York City the next year. Harry became a stockbroker but lost his job in the 1929 crash.

Harry Golden was a Jewish-American humorist, writer and publisher of the Carolina Israelite. He was also the author of many popular books including Only in America. Upon completion of his sentence he worked at his brother's Hotel Markwell on Manhattan's west side. Throughout the 1930s, as the menace of Nazism grew in Germany, Golden took a new and deep interest in Jewish history and culture, immersing himself in the literature of these subjects. Then in 1941 he left New York, moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and changed his name to Golden.

Golden is a great writer and back in the 60s did a great job of memorializing the Jewish ghetto experience. Harry Golden's insights about race, immigration and life in America are as good now as they were in the 50's when I first read the book. 6 people found this helpful. 4 people found this helpful.
