I have read Vernon Coleman's 12 book series on the Young Country Doctor and his Bilburians. The series was set in the 1970's and shows a young doctor coming out of med school to practice in a small English village that has still at least 20 years behind the times. One can't help but fall in love with Coleman's characters, animals, and town landmarks. Coleman is very direct, not always politically correct, so be prepared. He seems to have a passion for situations around large bosoms, buttoxes, overweight people and crossdressers in a number of his village stories.

He qualified as a doctor and was a general practitioner in Leamington Spa for a decade, but rebelled against the form-filling. His first book, The Medicine Men, 1975, accused the National Health Service of being controlled by the drug companies. It was serialized in The Guardian. He has written for The Daily Star and The Sun, and had a regular column in The People. His first books included The Medicine Men (1975), and Paper Doctors (1976). Balancing the Books (2015). Stories with a Twist (2015). One thing after Another (2015). In 1983 Coleman prepared the text for a series of home doctor programmes for computers.
