The work of German artist Norbert Schwontkowski is deceivingly simple, at once playful and melancholy, naïve and sophisticated. His small, unassuming canvases can also be oddly humorous at times, as in a painting of a monk pondering a row of washing machines or a figure made seemingly of googly eyes. Falling somewhere between abstraction, representation, and cartoon, his spare canvases tell a story in just a few brush strokes.

Norbert Schwontkowski challenges artistic categorization; his work falls between abstraction, realistic representation, and cartoon. He created his paints from hand-ground pigments mixed with various materials to yield a multitude of textures. Schwontkowski also added metal oxides to the pigments, creating shimmering surfaces that continue to change over time. His palette of pale earth tones, blacks and grays creates a muted, subdued atmosphere, while his carefully worked surfaces and minimal gestures demonstrate his sophisticated paint handling.

Norbert Schwontkowski mostly shrugs it off. Born in 1949 in Bremen, he is just a few years younger than Anselm Kiefer, and something of that scenery-chewing artist’s polar opposite. Along with the 18 conventionally-hung paintings in this exhibition, Schwontkowski presented roughly a dozen smallish canvases in a tight, congenial cluster of dreamers and jokers, wallflowers and grandstanders, along with a university or two.

CFA represented Norbert Schwontkowski from 2004 until his untimely passing in 2013 and has represented his estate since then. Die von da turns its attention to the illuminated openings that recur throughout Schwontkowski’s oeuvre, focusing on paintings made in the last decade of his life. These breaches take the form of windows and doorways, holes in mysterious landscapes, lanterns, top hats and bathtubs. His illuminated thresholds usher us into a melancholy dreamscape, imagining a mirror or a cracked vase as the rabbit holes that could contain its vastness.
